inclusion and
accessibility

It's important to me before I sign up for events or work with a new practitioner, that I read and plan ahead, and find out all the nitty-gritty details that are available (read: serious business). This page is for people who have similar needs or curiosities as I do. I hope it'd be helpful for you!

On this page I cover my personal background, my knowledge and abilities, sensory and physical environment you can expect, sensory accommodations available at my home studio, and my ongoing commitment as a practitioner related to inclusion and accessibility in practice.

My personal background:

I am neurodivergent and queer. I live with mild hypermobility and chronic illness disabilities. The work I offer in voice-, bodymind awareness-, and being & becoming identity exploration is deeply shaped by my personal journey of meeting and understanding my fuller self.

My knowledge and abilities as a practitioner:

My palpable interest in exploring the diversity of humaning and the human condition has led me to completing trainings and workshops beyond formal education. It also excites me to learn through reading, listening to, and watching educational content available online. Discussing ideas with neurodivergent/queer/disabled persons as practitioners in fields working directly with these communities.

The independent and professional development outlets I’ve engaged in have equipped me with a spectrum of tools and lenses that now make me feel more ready and comfortable to work with more:

  • Neurodivergent persons with low support needs (i.e. are able to interact with verbal communication and text-based communication, and may need accommodations in other areas e.g. sensory stimuli adjustments, learning style, etc.),

  • Queer folks who would like to explore their expression of self with curiosity and empowerment

  • Persons with sensory processing sensitivities and who may get tired more easily, and need a more spaced out session, more breaks, or sensory accommodations

Additional note on my knowledge and abilities:

I have not directly worked with disabled persons who are blind/have low vision, deaf/hard-of-hearing, or have physical disabilities that affect mobility to a large extent.

Physical and sensory environment:

My home studio in Bukit Panjang is in a building with lift access; the hallways and my studio room are unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. Someday, I hope to move to a larger and more accessible space, where I can offer Know Your Voice sessions to a wider community of folks.

  • There is a couch, piano bench, stool, pilates mat (~2.0cm), and cushions you can use for sitting. You can sit on the floor, lie down as needed, and sometimes we may work standing or walking around as appropriate for your needs in session.

  • We work with natural light in the day time, and with soft warm lighting in the evenings. There is an adjustable ceiling light if you wish for a brighter environment as well.

  • It's a moderately cool environment with little draft, with adjustable temperature via an air-conditioner. A fan can be used instead if that is preferred.

  • If physical contact may be facilitative for part of your session, I will always walk you through what it would be like, and we would discuss your preferences and concerns before proceeding. I use touch as a form of tactile external feedback for you to sense your self in space. For you to connect with your bodymind more tangibly. Sometimes, to invite a sense of groundedness, spaciousness, or containment. You can choose to:

    • Receive supportive touch from me with or without modification

    • Provide modified touch with your own hands on your self

    • Have an intermediary item to soften the touch from yourself or me (e.g. towel or scarf)

    • Opt out of touch-based activities entirely. We can find another activity without touch to guide your experience towards a similar learning experience.

Sensory accommodations:

  • I build in rest and recuperation into our sessions. The pace, duration and content of a session is adapted to your present state of being, and we check in after each smaller activity to see where you'd like to go from there.

  • Stimming and moving around is encouraged. Sessions with me invite stillness and movement as you feel needed, and sometimes as deliberate exploration processes. This includes sound-making through vocalisation, breathing, movement of your body, engaging with objects and environment.

  • Limited support items are available at my home studio: 2cm-thick pilates mat, bath towels, soft toys, massage ball, essential oils, and non-caffeinated warm drink.

  • You are encouraged to dress in whatever ways are comfortable for you, and to bring your personal support items as long as they are easy to contain on a table, floor, chair, or your bag when not in use. If you'd like to have your own scented item and are having a session at my home studio, please check with me before your session to make sure it's okay to have in the space!

My commitment:

I am continuously working towards being more inclusive in my languaging and approach to facilitating sessions. I acknowledge that my journey towards undoing the long-term influences of internalised ableist, -sexist, -racist, -capitalist, and settler-colonialist mindsets will take me a while. If we work together and my behaviour makes you uncomfortable due to these origins, and you feel compelled to share with me, I would like to know so that I can do better in the future.

Curious but unsure?:

If you feel that you and I might work well together and have questions, please contact me directly so we could discuss the possibilities. I’d like to make sessions more accessible to a larger variety of persons including people with differing capacities and socioeconomic backgrounds.

It’s most important to me that you feel that we are a good fit and that the arrangement we arrive at is mutually agreeable for us both before working together.

Disclaimer:

I am not certified as a therapist nor medical professional of any form, nor am I specifically certified to work with neurodivergent, queer and disabled persons. Much of my ethos comes from my personal experience, experimenting, and integrating what I've learnt from my formal training as a voice performer, voice educator, arts performance coach and bodymind awareness exploration coach. My work as a teacher and facilitator draw huge influences from somatic attachment therapy principles, psychosomatic practices, Alexander Technique (pending certification likely by 2026)., and depth psychology.
