What type of voice work do you teach?

Voice training with me emphasise on:

  • Integrating your bodymind, breath and voice

  • Principles of functional voice training

  • Understanding your unique anatomy and psychosomatic condition

  • Fundamentals of vocal health and wellness

  • Aligning your voice with your holistic self-identity

  • How to use your voice the way you want, whenever you want

My pedagogy is rooted in equipping clients and students with experiential knowledge, so that they can systematically expand their vocal capacity with growing self-assuredness. My job is to bring you to where you feel self-sufficient, and no longer need my input as much/at all!

Some pedagogies that inform my teaching include Somatic Voicework, Complete Vocal Technique, Alexander Technique, The Singing Athlete, and bel canto voice techniques.

For singing lessons, you'll primarily develop the full spectrum of your mixed voice (head-dominant, "mix-y mix", chest-dominant). We explore other vocal registers, resonances, and timbres you have available and want to be able to use freely (e.g. whistle register, overtone or subharmonic vocalisation, distortions, screaming, growling). You will also learn key skills in musicianship, critical listening, and performance/recording

I love working with singers to smoothly switch between vocal genres through structured cross-training! I am experienced with working with people on vocal and performance techniques for:

• Pop (primarily western pop and mandopop, and other contemporary commercial music)

• Musical theatre

• Rock and metal

• Western classical

• Choral and ensemble singing

• Experimental styles

For the speaking voice, we work on diction, audibility (voice projection; loudness and resonance), and voice modulation (i.e. changing the pitch, weight, and resonance of your voice as well as pacing to suit the intention, audience, and context of your speech).

I am experienced with coaching people from beginner to professional levels on their voice for:

  • Fitness class instruction

  • Classroom teaching

  • Presenting and public speaking (with and without microphone)

  • Virtual/Zoom interviews and presentations

  • Character and narration voiceover

  • Theatre performances

  • Identity-affirming voice use (e.g. using lower pitch, stronger voice for work; expressing your feelings through your voice and body in a congruent way)

  • Gender-affirming voice use (transgender and gender non-conforming voice training; voice feminisation and masculinisation, or finding your androgynous voice)

Please note I am not a speech therapist and am not qualified to work with physiological vocal disorders. I approach these from a functional voice training standpoint.

What can I expect in a session?

After an initial check-in on how you're doing and current curiosities, we craft your session plan based on the song/spoken text/vocal sound(s) you'd like to work on. Voice-focused sessions consist of:

  • Vocal and breathing exercises

  • Mindful awareness exploration

  • Bodymapping

  • Critical listening development

  • Musicianship skills training (for singing)

  • Performance and stage presence training

  • Reflective discussion to consolidate your learning

You'll apply your discoveries from these activities to your desired vocal task. We end with a review and I provide a recommended practice plan!

Voice-focused sessions may also involve additional tools such as straws, resistance bands, visual coordination items, towels, ball, and more. Browsing materials and online resources to support your learning are also available upon request or as relevant.

Know Your Voice offers voice lessons in Bukit Panjang (in-person at Jingyun's home studio), online, and limited home visit options as well.

Why work with Jingyun?

Our voice (the sonic and physical one) is a wonderful in-road to understanding ourselves and to shape how we go through life. If you'd like to learn in a fun and interactive learning environment to:

  • Get acquainted with your voice

  • Learn how your bodymind can enable you to express yourself with sincerity

  • Feel confident and exhilarated from singing or speaking the way you want

—I'd love to work with you!

Over the past decade, I have worked with many individuals and groups to help them discover their unique voice. To live the life they want through harnessing the confidence in themselves. I've also been through my own journey of struggling to know my own voice, figuring out what our human voice is capable of through trial and error, extensive training, and continued education.

What I teach and guide people to experience is birthed from the knowledge and wisdom I've synergised from learning, experimenting, failing, working, refining, and blossoming. I distill all of that for you, so that you can boldly know your voice:

for enjoyment and success,

to connect with people,

and share your being with the world!

It’s most important to me that you feel that we are a good fit and that the arrangement we arrive at is mutually agreeable for us both before working together. If after browsing this website you are unsure but are curious about working together, contact me directly and we can arrange a 15-minute discovery call.

What is your session fee?

Please contact me or fill up the Know Your Voice form and I'll send you the fees for the respective voice lesson tracks (Open Exploration, Focused Exploration, and Professional Exploration).

I offer sliding scale fees for persons who may need financial aid. There is also a reduced fee option if you'd like to have weekly lessons, or have more than 3 sessions within 2 months.

If you'd like a limited-time discount, you can register for the Know Your Voice Celebrations specials here.
